Laser Vision Correction

What Is LASIK?

LASIK or Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, is a refractive surgery for correcting myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. LASIK works by reshaping the cornea using a computer controlled beam of ultraviolet light from an excimer laser. The actual surgical process is done in a matter a minutes. Patients are given mild muscle relaxants before the process along with topical drops to anesthetize the eye and maintain cleanliness.  Following the procedure, patients should be transported home by an assistant as the treated eye is covered and should avoid light until the next day.

Most patients realize excellent vision the following morning. Recovery time can vary, especially for higher levels of correction. It is not unusual for vision to be slightly hazy for the first few weeks for patients with higher correction. You may also notice some temporary over-correction for a few weeks, which may cause difficulties with near or intermediate vision.
